Ranney Reigns One More Time

4-11-10 Lutheran Parker's Sparky Ranney helped his East squad win a close game against the West in the Mile High League Senior All-Star game.  Ranney's hustle all over the court, 3 point marksmanship and key rebound off a missed free throw in the fourth quarter helped seal the 51-49 victory in his last game wearing a Lutheran uniform.  Coach Adam was selected to coach the East squad and had this to say:  "Getting to coach in this game was a tremendous honor and getting to coach Sparky one more time was the icing on the cake."

State Consolation Champs!

3-13-10 The Lutheran Lions won the State Consolation Championship by defeating Wiggins HS 63-59 on the final day of the season.  The win was the team's school-record 22nd on the season as Lutheran was one of only two teams to end the year with two consecutive wins.  On Friday morning they responded from the disappointing loss Thursday to rout Hayden HS 57-40 to advance to the Consolation Championship.  In the much-anticipated first-round game of the State Tournament Thursday night, the Lions came out with great energy - especially on the defensive end - but struggled to put the ball in the basket.  Even though they trailed by 13 at half, a dunk by Andrew Bowers right after the break seemed to spark a comeback but it was short-lived as they continued to struggle offensively and lost 34-53 to Sanford HS.  Jonny Foote was named by the Denver Post to the all-tournament team.

League Champs!

2-21-10 Lutheran traveled to Lafayette on Thursday and came away with 61-48 victory to claim the Mile High League title and the #1 seed heading into this week's District 7 Tournament.  Down 8-0 early in the first quarter, the Lions regrouped and came back strong in the second quarter and took a 23-20 lead going into intermission.  They blew the game open in the third, outscoring Alexander Dawson 23-9 and cruised to their first league title in school history.  Sophomore Jonny Foote lead the team with 17 points including three from beyond the arc.  Dalton Horan was next with 15 but it was his defense that provided the spark in the third quarter which included a big blocked shot on a fast break that ignited the team.  He had six steals and three blocks.  Andrew Bowers scored 9 and brought the house down on an alley-oop dunk in the third quarter.  Zach Loptien added 9 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists while committing only two turnovers against the Mustang's pressure.  Neil Jost was a huge defensive presence all game and lead the team with eight rebounds.

As the #1 seed they will host on Tuesday night the winner of the Maranatha/Nederland pigtail game (played Monday night).  Game time is scheduled for 7pm.  The LHSP girls team also secured a home game on Tuesday and they will play right before the boys at 5:30pm.  Click HERE to see the full District 7 bracket.

Lutheran traveled to Greeley on Friday to face Dayspring Christian.  With stifling defensive pressure the Lions broke out to a 15-8 lead after the first quarter and never looked back.  Jonny Foote was red-hot, hitting 9 of his 12 shots and finished with 21 points to lead all scorers.  Andrew Bowers was next with 9, followed by Dalton Horan's 8 and 6 a piece from Mike Thielen and Niel Jost.

Week 7 and 8 Recap

2-8-10 It's been a roller coaster ride the past two weeks for the Lions as they experienced a 30 point loss followed by three wins in which they outscored their opponents 191-73.

On January 28th Lutheran traveled to Broomfield to take on the undefeated #2 ranked (3A) Jefferson Academy Jaguars.  The atmosphere was raucous and had the intensity of a playoff game.  JA started out with hot shooting and defensive pressure, and took a 25-13 lead going into the half.  The Lions never could get their rhythm as the Jaguars pulled away in the second half for a 65-35 victory over the visitors.  Dalton Horan lead Lutheran with 13 points.

The following week had three league games and the Lions regrouped and won all three in convincing fashion.  On Tuesday they traveled to Black Hawk where they met up with Gilpin County.  The result was a 78-15 trouncing of the host Eagles.  Jonny Foote lead all scorers with 18, followed by 16 from Horan, 9 from Andrew Bowers and 7 from lone senior Sparky Ranney.

On Friday they hosted Nederland with a similar result, earning a 68-29 victory.  Lutheran jumped out early with great defensive pressure and lead 36-12 at half, then coasted to an easy victory.  Andrew Bowers lead the team with 11 points including a rim-shaking two-handed dunk in the post.  Jonny Foote poured in 10 of his own followed by a career-high for Connor Parkinson (9 pts), 8 from Jordan Murphy and 7 from Sparky Ranney.

The final game of the week came on Saturday when they traveled to Loveland to take on up-and-coming Resurrection Christian.  While not their best offensive effort, Lutheran brought a smothering defense that shut out the Cougars in the first quarter, allowed only eight at half and held them to a mere 22% shooting for the game.  Andrew Bowers lead the team with a double-double (17 pts, 10 rebounds), followed by 12 from Jonny Foote and 5 from Neil Jost.

On tap this week are two more league opponents - Maranatha and Dayspring.  Lutheran is now 12-4 overall and tied for first place in league with a 6-0 record.

Week 6 Recap

1-26-10 Lutheran won its only game of the week when they beat visiting Longmont Christian 60-39 on Saturday night.  Dalton Horan lead the team with 15 points followed by 13 from Andrew Bowers and 10 from Mike Thielen.  The league win improved their overall record to 9-3 and 3-0 in league.  The Lions moved up to #10 in this week's poll on Coloradopreps.com.  Next up is a matchup with Jefferson Academy who is unbeaten and ranked #2 in 3A on Thursday.

Week 5 Recap

1-18-10 The Lions faced their toughest week of the season so far and came out with three impressive wins.  On Tuesday they hosed local high school Legend, a 3A school, and earned a hard-fought win.  After trailing 18-15 to start the third quarter, Lutheran turned up the heat, outscoring the Titans 14-5 leading up to intermission.  Both teams traded blows in the second half and the Lions came out 53-47 victors.  Andrew Bowers scored a game-high 21 points followed by Jonny Foote with 10, and Neil Jost and Zach Loptien with 7 a piece.

A key Mile High League matchup was next on Friday night as the Lions traveled to last year's league champion, Heritage Christian in Fort Collins.  The game had a playoff feeling to it throughout as Lutheran lead by one after the first quarter, and by seven at halftime.  They broke the game open in the third, outscoring the Eagles 15-10 and took a 12 point lead into the fourth, where they finished out with a 53-44 victory.  This was the first league loss for Heritage and Lutheran improved its league record to 2-0.  Zach Loptien scored a career-high 17 points to lead the Lions.  Bowers added 12 of his own and Neil Jost scored 7.

The third game of the week came on Saturday as Lutheran hosted Byers for a battle of top 20 2A teams.  It was a defensive game throughout and the Bulldogs took a narrow 17-16 lead going into intermission.  The Lions responded by outscoring Byers 17-7 in the third quarter and held on for a gutty 42-36 win.  Johnny Foote lead Lutheran with 10 points, Dalton Horan had 8, Andrew Bowers 7 and Zach Loptien 6.

This week the Lions only have one game which will be Saturday when they host league opponent Longmont Christian.  The game will also be the annual Parent's Night when all they players parents will be honored.

Week 4 Recap

1-12-10 After a 20 day break in between games, the Lions were back in action and opened up 2010 with two convincing wins.  On Friday night they earned their first league win against Front Range Christian, 61-36.  After leading by only three at halftime, Lutheran wore out the visiting Falcons with great execution.  Johnny Foote broke out of a mini-slump by scoring 16 points (11 in 3rd quarter) and grabbing 6 rebounds.  Neil Jost scored a season-high 10 and Zach Loptien dropped in 9 points along with 7 rebounds and dished out 4 assists.  Mike Thielen got his first career start and gave a solid effort scoring 5 points and grabbing 6 boards.

Kiowa came to town on Saturday for a matchup of Regional qualifiers from last season.  The Lions steadily pulled away from the Indians and walked away with a 47-27 victory to raise their season record to 5-3.  Andrew Bowers had another double-double scoring 12 points and grabbing 11 boards.  Zach Loptien had another solid performance scoring 11 points and grabbing 7 boards of his own.  Dalton Horan had a blue-collar effort scoring 8 points with 9 rebounds while controlling the paint.

The season kicks into full speed during Week 5 as the Lions play three tough games - Tuesday they host local school Legend (#12 in 3A) then travel to Fort Collins for a key league matchup against Heritage Christian, and return home for a matchup against #12 Byers.

Week 3 Recap

12-19-09 The only game of the week was the annual matchup versus sister-school Denver Lutheran and the game lived up to its billing.  While not the most polished game ever played, it made up for it in intensity and drama.  Denver held a five point lead at halftime but Parker came out strong in the third quarter and lead by six going into the fourth.  The Lights eventually came back and sent the game into overtime where they prevailed by four.  Andrew Bowers scored a career high 28 points in leading the Lions.  Bo Milberger had some big plays in the second half and ended with 9 points and 8 rebounds.  The Lions head into the break at 3-3 and open up league play on January 8 when they host Front Range Christian.

Week 2 Recap

12-13-09 It was a tough week for the Lions as they faced two tough 3A opponents and came away with two losses.  First up was Colorado Academy on Tuesday in a game which went down to the wire and the visiting Mustangs held on for a four point win.  Andrew Bowers lead all scorers with 22 points followed by 8 from Dalton Horan and 7 from Neil Jost.

On Saturday Lutheran headed to the Katte Gymnasium on the campus of Denver Christian for a non-league contest.  The Lions came out flat while the Crusaders couldn't miss, hitting five 3-pointers in the first half.  The deficit was too much to make up as DC ran away with an 18 point win.  Bowers lead all scorers with 21.

Week 1 Recap: 3-0!

12-6-09 The first week of the regular season went very well for the Lions as they won all three games they played. First off was #5 Kent Denver (3A) on Tuesday night. The teams traded blows early until Lutheran put on a 21-8 run in the second quarter to take a 14-point lead into halftime. An ugly second half saw Kent close the gap to two points until the Lions made some big plays down the stretch to hold on for a 57-53 victory. Andrew Bowers lead the team with 18 points and 16 rebounds. Johnny Foote added 15 points along with 9 boards of his own.

In game two on Friday the Lions jumped out early and smothered the overmatched Generals from Arrupe Jesuit 59-21 in the first round of the Lutheran Parker Tip-Off Tournament.  All 11 players scored for Lutheran lead by 13 from Foote, 8 from Bowers and 7 a piece from Bo Milberger and Dalton Horan.

Saturday saw a big matchup in the Championship game against Evangelical Christian Academy.  The Eagles played well in the first half and took a five point lead going into intermission.  The Lions came out roaring in the third quarter and put on a 21-6 run to take a 10 point lead into the fourth quarter and never looked back to capture their third-straight tournament championship.  Senior Sparky Ranney provided energy off the bench, creating havoc on both ends of the floor.  Zach Loptien played a solid all-around game against ECA's press and provided his own pressure, collecting seven steals, five rebounds and four assists.  Bowers lead the team in scoring with 21 points and Milberger added 19 of his own.

Next week doesn't get any easier as two tough 3A opponents are on the schedule.  On Tuesday Colorado Academy visits Parker and Saturday the Lions travel to Denver Christian

Tough Road Back To Pueblo

The Lions will play another tough schedule this season.
